The Near West Side of Chicago is a large area that covers almost 9.3 square miles of land just west of the downtown Chicago loop. The Near West Side is a diverse melting pot divided into many different community areas and neighborhoods including: the West Loop, Fulton Market District, Greektown, University Village / Little Italy, Illinois Medical District, Tri-Taylor and United Center Park.

There are few areas in Chicago with as much opportunity for real estate investment as the Near West Side, but that doesn’t mean the area doesn’t have neighborhood amenities to satisfy even the most savvy of city dwellers. New public transportation options are being added to the Near West Side area in a BIG way including, the new CTA Green Line train station at Damen Ave and Lake St.

Just west of N Ashland Ave is an area known as United Center Park - home of the legendary sports franchises, Chicago Bulls and Chicago Blackhawks and an entourage of high-profile entertainment events and concerts year-round. The United Center expansion of 190,000 square feet of indoor fan retail space brought the iconic Michael Jordan statue indoors for visitors to enjoy year-round. The MB Ice Arena is another new addition to the United Center Park neighborhood and hosts the Chicago Blackhawks team practice facility and a community training center with indoor public ice skating, children’s ice hockey leagues, figure skating and adult recreational hockey leagues. Sports bars, casual restaurants, craft breweries, distilleries and coffee roasters are the primary form of food + drink establishments in the United Center Park neighborhood, but with the West Loop’s higher-end cuisine options next door, residents can easily enjoy the best of both worlds.

United Center Park is situated just west of the West Loop and the two areas are separated by the boundary of Ashland Ave. United Center Park is located within the greater Near West Side community area in the 60612 zip code and is part of the 27th Ward.

Kinzie Street to the North, the 290 Expressway to the South, Ashland Ave to the East and Western Ave / Talman Ave to the West forms the United Center Park area. Madison Street is the main thoroughfare on which the United Center is located (1901 W Madison St) and after which the neighborhood got its name.

West Fulton Market and the Kinzie Industrial Corridor can be included in the United Center Park community although these areas consists primarily of commercial and industrial real estate and are very limited in residential buildings for sale. Most recently, real estate developers have expressed their desire to build more residential condo inventory and mixed use developments in the West Fulton Market area.

 

Near West Side Public Transportation

The heart of the Near West Side’s United Center Park neighborhood is easily accessible via CTA train at the Green Line and Pink Line ‘L’ train station at Ashland. A new Green Line ‘L’ train station is being installed at Damen and Lake that will vastly improve public transportation to and from United Center Park. The Blue Line Illinois Medical District ‘L’ train station on the southern boundary of United Center Park also provides access to the neighborhood. Residents can catch any of the convenient bus lines at #19 United Center Express, #20 Madison, #9 Ashland, #X9 Ashland Express, #50 Damen, #49 Western and #126 Jackson.

Various other public transportation methods can be used in and around the West Loop and Illinois Medical District making it extremely convenient to get around the city of Chicago fast and efficiently.

Tri-Taylor is a Near West Side neighborhood most known for its eastern boundary, the Historic U.S. Route 66 / Ogden Ave. Although the neighborhood is primarily comprised of residential real estate and has very little commercial real estate inventory, Tri-Taylor does have a few famous eateries and bars that are a can’t miss if you live in the Near West Side.

Where is Tri-Taylor?

The Tri-Taylor neighborhood is situated just west of the Illinois Medical District. The neighborhood’s boundaries are the 290 Eisenhower Expressway to the North, Ogden Ave to the East running Southwest which also creates its Southern boundary and Maplewood Ave to the West. Tri-Taylor is part of the Near West Side community and is included in the 27th Ward area. The main streets in Tri-Taylor are S Western Ave and Ogden Ave / Route 66.

Tri-Taylor is a small community area but it’s location is ideal for medical staff, nurses, doctors, surgeons and other medical professionals due to its proximity to the Illinois Medical District. The West Loop is also very close for all of the best dining and nightlife establishments in Chicago.

 

Tri-Taylor Public Transportation

Tri-Taylor is accessible via CTA train at the Blue Line ‘L’ train station at Illinois Medical District as well as the Western Blue Line station. Residents can catch bus lines to and from Tri-Taylor at #49 Western, #X49 Western Express, #157 Ogden, #12 Taylor, #50 Damen and #7 Harrison.

For lunch, enjoy the famed Cheezborger at the legendary Billy Goat Tavern (1535 W Madison St). Then embark on a Chicago craft beer tour on the Near West Side. Start at Goose Island Beer Company (1800 W Fulton St) to experience Chicago’s most iconic craft beer brewpub.

Then head over to On Tour Brewing Company (1725 W Hubbard St) for an industrial microbrewery and pourhouse tasting or Finch Beer Co (1800 W Walnut St), best known for serving craft beer in a can. United Center Park is home to many educational institutions - the most notable of which are Malcolm X College (1900 W Jackson Blvd), William H Brown School of Technology (54 N Hermitage Ave) and Suder Montessori Magnet Elementary School (2022 W Washington Blvd).

Union Park (1501 W. Randolph Street) serves as the neighborhood’s main public park but the area also has Touhy-Herbert Park and Ellen Gates Starr Park to serve the area’s residents with green space.

Tri-Taylor’s green space amenities can be found at Claremont Park with a children’s playground and Livingston Field Park (2139 W Lexington St) with an artificial turf surface for a soccer / football field and two softball diamonds. Altgeld Park (515 S Washtenaw Ave) is also situated just west of Western Ave and includes a variety of sports programming for children of all ages.

Washington Irving Elementary School (749 S Oakley Blvd) and Children’s Hope Academy (2189 W Bowler St) are the two main educational institutions that serve Tri-Taylor’s youth.
