Mary Bartelme Park West Loop

Walk to work, meet friends for happy hour and then dinner at one of Chicago’s best restaurants — you can do it all in Chicago’s West Loop. Changes are happening all around this hip neighborhood. New office spaces, hotels, apartments for rent and condos for sale - the West Loop is booming with new real estate development.

The West Loop is rooted in the past with turn-of-the-century buildings that were once factories, warehouses and meatpacking facilities. The area was originally Chicago’s wholesale market district and it got its start around 1850. It stayed this course and kept a low profile until 1990, when Oprah opened Harpo Studios in the West Loop. Then later came the award-winning chefs that opened some of Chicago’s best restaurants, turning Randolph Street into what is now known as “Restaurant Row”. A CTA train station was added in 2012 and some of the biggest names in business followed soon after with influential companies like Google and McDonald’s leading the way.

Where Is the West Loop?

The West Loop is immediately west of the downtown Loop and the two areas are separated by the Chicago River. The West Loop is located within the greater Near West Side community area in the 60661 and 60607 zip codes and is part of the 27th Ward.

Randolph Street (150 North) between Ogden Avenue (1544 West) and Halsted Street (800 West) forms the heart of the West Loop. Madison Street (0 North/South) is another major commercial thoroughfare, along with West Fulton Market (300 North), which is also considered part of the Fulton Market District.

The West Loop is easily accessible via CTA train at the Green Line and Pink Line 'L' train stations. Morgan is the central West Loop train station, Ashland and Clinton are additional stops on the edges of the neighborhood. The Blue Line ‘L’ train (Clinton, UIC-Halsted and Racine are stations along the southern edge of the West Loop and West Loop residents can catch any of the convenient bus lines at #20 Madison, #9 Ashland, #X9 Ashland Express and #8 Halsted. Metra and Amtrak trains are also easily accessible at nearby Ogilvie Transportation Center and Union Station making commuting to and from the Chicago suburbs and regional states and cities a cinch.

Getting to the UIC Chicago campus and the Illinois Medical District from the West Loop is easy if you are walking or by bike. The pedestrian bridge allows for students, faculty and medical professionals to walk across the 290 Expressway from the West Loop safely to the University Village neighborhood. The West Loop pedestrian bridge is located on the corner of S Peoria St and W Van Buren St next to the UIC College of Urban Planning and Development building. The UIC-Halsted Train Station can also be accessed from the West Loop pedestrian bridge for easy access to and from the downtown Chicago loop.

West Loop Condo Loft Building

West Loop Condo Loft Building

Homes for sale in the West Loop are typically found in classic industrial loft condo buildings (large brick structures circa the early 1900s) or low- to mid-rise condo buildings (newer construction built within the last 20 years). Single family homes, townhomes and two-flat + three-flat multi-family buildings are very limited in the West Loop neighborhood. The West Loop is also home to the largest concentration of millennials in the United States so renting in the neighborhood is highly popular, although the monthly price tag on rentals tends to be much higher than a monthly mortgage payment.
